The Big Knit

Age UK and Innocent Smoothies have worked together for a number of years, raising funds by knitting hats for smoothie bottles which are sold in supermarkets up and down the land.

Calling all knitters! It’s time to join The Big Knit for Age UK

Age Concern Lutterworth & District is calling on nimble-fingered knitters in Lutterworth and surrounding villages to get creative and knit little hats for Age UK and innocent’s Big Knit and help older people keep warm and well in winter.

The Big Knit returns and budding knitters across the UK are being called upon to knit miniature woolly hats to adorn innocent smoothie bottles, which will be sold in stores nationwide, usually Boots and Sainsbury’s stores. For each be-hatted smoothie sold, Innocent Smoothies will donate 25p to help Age UK fund national and local winter projects. Age Concern Lutterworth & District
is calling on local knitters to get as many little hats as possible to them and needs knitters and those wanting to give it a go to help make this a reality. You can get the patterns off the internet or call into the office and we are only too happy to print some off for you.

Each winter, one older person dies needlessly every eight minutes because of the cold. With over a decade of support from knitters up and down the country, The Big Knit has raised vital funds to support local and national winter projects to help older people keep warm and well in the winter.

The programme started in 2003, and since then has sold 6 million hats with over 2 million raised for Age UK’s and Age Concern’s, with even more hoped to be raised in the future.

Alison Anderton, Events, Services and Shop Manager in Lutterworth said: “The colder months of the year can be really tough for many older people, who can face difficulties protecting themselves from the harsh winter weather, getting out and about and staying connected. That’s why it’s so important that local knitters get behind The Big Knit to help raise funds for vital local winter services. We need knitters in and around Lutterworth to create lots of miniature hats so we can help older people in the local area access our services throughout the winter months”.

Jamie Sterry, innocent drinks, said: “Every year The Big Knit campaign relies on the support of thousands of volunteers up and down the country who knit little woolly hats for us to pop on our smoothie bottles. We hope that lots of people are inspired to get knitting this year to help us continue to raise money for Age UK and help those who need it most in winter.”
